Show Notes
Drew and Doug return to the KVSH studio for another live edition of Classic Rock and Beyond, serving up strange traditions, hard-earned sea stories, and a fresh batch of indie and classic rock.
This month’s Weird News journey through all 50 states takes us deep into regional Americana:
Minnesota:
At the Minnesota State Fair, award-winning artists sculpt massive butter portraits of Princess Kay and her Court inside a refrigerated room, continuing a dairy-soaked tradition that dates back to 1965.
Mississippi:
A long-running mosquito calling contest puts contestants to the test as judges listen for accuracy, realism, and emotional commitment in their attempts to imitate the state’s most infamous pest.
Missouri:
Doug explores the surprisingly real world of the Federal Cheese Reserve, a vast stockpile of cheddar stored in humidity-controlled caves beneath Springfield, Missouri—because of course that exists.
In Things That Make Doug Mad, Doug unloads on the unforgivable sin of being late for watch. He recounts a particularly infuriating experience aboard a tugboat involving a mate who repeatedly slept through the start of his shift. After three warnings, Doug reached his limit—and a replacement met the crew at the next port.
This month’s Drew and Mark Show Archives dip back to a unique 2017 episode where Drew and Mark brought two bands to the island for the same broadcast. Indie rock outfits Vervex and The Co Founder, who conveniently shared a few members, both performed live in the KVSH studio, delivering melodic, tightly woven sets that still hold up today.
Watch these bands perform live in the VoV studios:
It’s another episode packed with oddball history, firsthand stories, and the eclectic musical mix that keeps Classic Rock and Beyond exactly where it belongs.
