PSA ~ Vashon Island Rowing Club

Sometimes they’re hard to see but every once in a while you hear about a pandemic silver lining…something made better by having to adapt to a world with COVID-19 in it. For the Vashon Island Rowing Club, the pandemic was tough on us but our silver lining was that athletes who were always resistant to the sport because of its early hour and their off-island commute, were now working from home a few days a week and able to give rowing a try. For years, we’ve heard, “yeah, I’d love to give it a go, but the job just won’t let me.” Well, now, with more people working from home for at least part of the week, rowing has re-entered the picture as an accessible sport for many more people. Our club has gotten a little younger as a result and we think that’s great! If you’re among those for whom the door to rowing has cracked open even the tiniest bit, here’s a quick and easy way to step through it. National Learn to Row day is coming up on Saturday, June 4th. There will be two free sessions at Jensen Point on the Burton Peninsula. 10:30am to 1p and 4:30 in the afternoon to 7 in the evening. Coach Delany and club volunteers will show you the boathouse, get you going on the indoor rowing machines, and you WILL get out on the water with experienced Vashon Island Rowing Club members for a coached session. Did I mention it’s free! Well, it bears repeating. National Learn to Row Day. Jensen Point Boathouse. Saturday June 4th with two free sessions starting at 10:30am and 4:30pm.  This has been a voice of Vashon public service announcement….quick hands, powerful legs department.
