The Music and the Movies: Episode 27: Brando

November 22nd, 2021 by Robert Horton

In this episode we trace one of the most influential acting careers in movies: Marlon Brando, part acting student, part animal force, all original. Some terrific music has accompanied Brando’s films, from Leonard Bernstein’s foray into soundtrack composing (On the Waterfront) to soulful music by Alex North (A Streetcar Named Desire). There’s plenty of room for a waltz (cue the Godfather theme) and a last tango (in Paris, obviously), and we won’t ignore Brando’s lone stab at Broadway-style crooning, either, even if he thought his singing in Guys and Dolls was akin to “the mating call of a yak.”
