Show Notes

How do two busy islanders carry forward a beloved gardening legacy while building a life rooted in care for the land, community, and each other? Selena Ligrano and Keaton Freeman provide a service essential to island gardeners—growing healthy, locally adapted plant starts through their Peak Moon Nursery. In this conversation, we explore how they balance full lives while running an entrepreneurial venture that carries forward the legacy of Michelle Crawford’s Pacific Potager.

Selena Ligrano is a longtime Vashon resident with over 15 years of experience in landscaping and vegetable production. She spent more than five years at Tilth Alliance as a Project Manager, where she led educational programming and community outreach for the Natural Yard Care Program. Selena also launched and managed the Culturally Relevant Organic Plant Starts (CROPS) program, distributing more than 10,000 plant starts annually to immigrant, refugee, BIPOC, and low-income communities. She currently works as an Organics, Natural Yard Care, and Waste Prevention Planner with Seattle Public Utilities, while continuing to deepen her understanding of how food systems connect communities, culture, and care for the land.

Keaton Freeman brings over 20 years of experience as a woodworker. He spent years at Urban Hardwoods as shop lead, mastering slab wood design and building high-end tables, credenzas, and custom furniture. He also worked for four years with DowBuilt as a lead cabinetmaker, creating some of the finest custom cabinetry for elite West Coast clients. Alongside his woodworking practice, Keaton shares Selena’s deep love for growing home-grown herbs and vegetables.

Peak Moon Nursery began as a small backyard nursery three years ago and grew into a true passion project when Selena and Keaton rented the Pacific Potager greenhouse following Michelle Crawford’s retirement. Today, Peak Moon continues the tradition of thoughtful, community-rooted plant growing that island gardeners have long relied on.

You can find Peak Moon Nursery on the west side of Vashon Highway, with the entrance located approximately 300 feet north of 22815 Vashon Highway South. They will also be selling plant starts at the Vashon Farmers Market.
