The Big Band Funk of Maceo Parker
The theme of this show is about the big band funk sound produced by a musician whose name is synonymous with Funky Music. Yes, Mr. 2% Jazz, 98% Funk himself…Maceo Parker.
You’ve heard him on a lot of the James Brown tunes I’ve played here on this show. Plus I did a special covering his earlier solo albums and I thought it only appropriate to share some of his later music too.
As you know, Maceo has played with each and every leader of funk, starting with James Brown, which Maceo describes as “like being at University”, then jumping aboard the Mothership with George Clinton, and then his ongoing part in Prince’s tours.
So let’s continue with our funk education with some tunes from the School’s In! album, along with tunes from his Made By Maceo and Funk Overload albums.
