Show Notes
One hundred shows and still going strong…and Thank Goodness It’s Funky. If you’ve been listening to the you’ve gotten to know some of the Movers & Shakers in the funk genera who have been keeping everyone movin’ and shakin’.
So what are my favorite funk tunes from the past 99 shows? Well yes, the list includes Bootsy Collins, Maceo Parker, Pee Wee Ellis, and Fred Wesley, of course. Oh, did I forget to mention James Brown? Hey Funksters, just joking. He’s there, along with Cory Wong, The Brothers Strut, Ida Neilsen, Slynk, Judith Hill and a surprise guest, who you all are familiar with. You’ll have to listen to the show for that one.
These Movers & Shakers might not be on your list. Here’s why they’re on mine.
Yes, it’s obvious about James Brown. being there. Why this tune, of all tunes, to be played? Like so many funk musicians, Brown got stiff competition from disco music. With this tune, Brown showed he could make the disco genera funky, showing it’s all about having live musicians versus machines making sure it’s funky. Plus the steady 4:4 beat gets a little boring after a while. So break that mold…just like a lot of the other musicians I selected for this show: Bootsy Collins, Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, Bill Laswell, Cory Wong, to name a few. I wanted to share these creative artists in contrast to the same-old same-old. Listen in and see what YOU think.
