Carmelina reminds me of S. E. Hinton, the author ofThe Outsiders, in that “much of her workdraws from real life, including her adolescent experiences and observations of students.” My interview with Melina, as she likes to be called, was a deep dive into many different topics, as she poured forth thoughts and ideas with the passion of her Italian roots and the insights of her Australian upbringing.
