Bill Moyer, the co-founder of Backbone Organization, is a “radical solutionary,” committed to addressing root problems by empowering a vibrant social movement with a visionary message. We talk about his early background and how community and creative expression have sustained and supported him in his work for social change over the decades.
Through Backbone, Bill and his collaborators combine lessons of the performing arts and the Art of War to invigorate nonviolent movements for social change. They have trained thousands of change agents and designed and produced hundreds of creative protests. Backbone is renowned for its innovative tactics, ranging from light projection to giant net banners, giant inflatable imagery to the kayaktivism made famous through their work on the 2015 ShellNo! campaign.
Backbone has been the driver behind Solutionary Rail, offering an efficient and ecological option to put US rail infrastructure back in service of the public interest with efficient, easily electrified railroads. In 2016, Bill co-authored the book Solutionary Rail, a people–powered campaign to electrify US railroads and open corridors for a clean energy future. Since then, the campaign has evolved into a national effort.
Bill is also a percussionist, trained in the ancient Indian tabla(drum) tradition. He lives with his wife and daughter in the woods of Vashon Island.
