Show Notes

Researchers studying the effects of solitary confinement on living beings are prohibited by law to inflict the elements of solitary on rats…because it’s considered too inhumane. Yet we continue to hold at least 122,000 human beings in solitary on any given day in American prisons and detention centers.

Join host Susan McCabe in a powerful conversation with author and journalist, Christopher Blackwell, from his prison cell as he explains the physical and psychological impacts of this internationally recognized form of torture for which we tax payers are paying.

Blackwell is releasing a book he co-authored with four other experts on the topic. Ending Isolation, the Case Against Solitary Confinement will be released September 4, and information about local events can be found at

Listen through to the close of this REALTalk special for a lilting piano solo by the late great Jack Barbash.
