REALTalk ~ Martin Koenig ~ Bulgaria

December 3rd, 2019 by Susan McCabe

In 1966 a young Martin Koenig found himself captivated by the diverse music and the rich culture of Bulgaria.

In the ensuing 13 years, with recommendations from the likes of anthropologist Margaret Mead, Koenig made several field trips to the small Eastern European country.  He recorded its music, photographed its people and learned their dances.  In fact, he’s known on Vashon for leading folk dances on Summer nights in the Village Green.

Now Smithsonian Folkways has published his work in a collection of photos and songs titled Sound Portraits from Bulgaria: A Journey to a Vanished World”.  Tune in as Koenig regales host Susan McCabe with stories and music from the lost Bulgarian culture he’s preserved in his book, and his personal journey through the creative process.  It’s sure to be REAL.

Martin Koenig will launch his book Sound Portraits from Bulgaria at a special event Sunday, December 8, 4pm at Open Space for Arts & Community.  Admission is free.
