Episode # 19 – The Continental Navy – October 1775

The U.S. Navy was originally established by the Second Continental Congress when it created the Continental Navy to disrupt British shipping supporting the British Army. While the Continental Navy did not make a major impact on the Revolutionary War, it did provide the basis for the traditions and experienced commanders who developed the U.S Navy when it was created in 1794. Vashon has had what amounts to its own navies created with the Mosquito Fleet steamers, the Vashon Ferry District and the creation of the passenger only ferries.
