This week we listen to the five soundtracks nominated for Best Original Score for movies released in 2021 (the Academy Awards will be handed out March 27, 2022). It’s a varied, accomplished bunch: Hans Zimmer’s ethereal soundscapes for Dune; Jonny Greenwood’s modern yet timeless twang for The Power of the Dog; Alberto Iglesias’s sweeping romantic music for Parallel Mothers (his 13^th collaboration with director Pedro Almodovar); Nicholas Britell’s sometimes zany, sometimes wonder-filled score for Don’t Look Up; and Germaine Franco’s Latin pulse for the Disney animation, Encanto—the first-ever nomination in this category for a Latina. And sure—we’ll try to guess a winner.
