Cathy Sarkowsky: Artist and Philanthropist

November 17th, 2024 by Sally Jean Fox

Cathy Sarkowsky is a Vashon-based painter and printmaker whose expressive, non-representational work has been exhibited widely across the Northwest over her thirty-year career. Her art explores the balance between control and spontaneity, blending vibrant color and rich textures inspired by nature and personal experiences. Cathy holds a BA from Pomona College and MA degrees from both Antioch University and the University of Oregon. Her work is featured in notable collections, including the Tacoma Art Museum and Swedish Hospital in Seattle.

Beyond her artistic practice, Cathy is a passionate philanthropist and the founder of the Vashon Artist Residency. Established in 2021, the Residency provides a serene retreat on Quartermaster Harbor, offering artists the time, space, and inspiration to develop their craft. For Cathy, the Residency fulfills a lifelong dream, and alongside Executive Director Heather Dwyer, she is dedicated to fostering a community where artists can rest, recharge, and create transformative work.
