Gale Lurie: Raku potter and artist community builder

November 26th, 2024 by Sally Jean Fox

Gale Lurie is an accomplished potter, celebrated for her mastery of the Raku tradition—a dynamic and demanding art form that thrives on embracing uncertainty. Currently serving as the President of VIVA (Vashon Island Visual Artists), Gale has been a vital force in fostering artistic community and collaboration on the island.

Her inspiring journey from schoolteacher to artist reflects her passion for creativity and connection. Gale’s impressive career highlights include founding Claystation 2, an activity center that engaged over 2,000 children during the Seattle International Children’s Festival, and launching the Wedgwood Art Festival in Seattle. Most recently, she organized the inaugural DocktonStudio Tour, which drew hundreds of guests eager to explore the vibrant art scene in her neighborhood.

A passionate advocate for artists, Gale emphasizes the power of connection and community in sustaining creative lives—values she embodies through her leadership at VIVA.

During the upcoming VIVA Studio Tour the first two weekends of December, Gale will welcome visitors to her Dockton studio, showcasing her striking pottery and that of seven other talented local artists. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the artistry of Gale’s and her collaborators.
