School Vaccination Begins Next Week: Here Are the Details
Vaccinations for young children will finally begin this coming week, and parents have been responding enthusiastically. In the first 24 hours the vaccination registration signup was open, there were over 200 signups, about two-thirds of the first group in line for getting their shots.


An initial small shipment of pediatric vaccine has been allocated for Vashon now that all federal and state authorizations have been completed. Arrival of that first shipment will allow us to quickly ramp up a series of school-based vaccination clinics.


All children ages 5 through 11 are eligible, including those who are not VISD students. Vaccines are free to all.


If all goes well, the current plan would allow Vashon children to receive their first dose before Thanksgiving and be fully vaccinated by the December holidays. Last year, holiday gatherings and travel triggered a major COVID spike on the island, so experts suggest getting an appointment as soon as possible.


Vaccinations will take place right on school grounds, thanks to a collaboration between Vashon Island School District, Vashon Pharmacy, VashonBePrepared, the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), Medical Reserve Corps (MRC), and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).


The series of vaccination clinics is being organized in grade-level groups. That’s so the clinics can be designed around the needs of the children and their families, especially the youngest kids, who might be a bit anxious about getting a shot. Also, the limited supply of vaccine at the start of this project means it will not be possible to vaccinate all grade-level groups at once.


Three Grade-Level Groups Served in This Order: Register Now!


First up will be children in grades 3 through 5. After-school first-dose clinics will take place on November 10 and 11, from 4pm to 7pm. Go to tinyurl.com/kids345 to register and give parental permission.


Next up will be children in grade 6 (ages 11 and younger only). These clinics will be given during the school day. Vaccination of this group starts on November 12, with a second clinic a few days later after additional vaccine arrives. Go to tinyurl.com/kids6plus to register and give parental permission.


Third will be children aged 5 and older in grades pre-K through 2. These clinics will happen at school during a weekend, to be scheduled after more vaccine arrives. Registration has not yet opened.


You must register your child by noon on Tuesday, November 9, 2021. No child will be vaccinated without this registration and parent permission. Parental permission is mandatory under state law. It’s important that you do that right away, so we can plan for the number of vaccinations that will be needed.


You can also register your child by completing a paper form that is available at the Chautauqua and McMurray school offices. Paper forms must be returned to Vashon Pharmacy or the offices of Chautauqua or McMurray by the deadline of noon on Tuesday, November 9, 2021.


Children will automatically be scheduled for their second-dose clinics to occur three weeks after they receive their first dose.


Booster Vax Operations Shift Back to Pharmacy
Booster shot vaccinations for adults continue to be available, but at a different location. The high volume booster vaccination operation located at the Methodist Church has been put on hiatus while volunteer resources are shifted to operate the upcoming school vaccination clinics. You will still register at the same web page: VashonPharmacy.com/COVID. However, you will be given directions for getting your shot inside the Pharmacy.
School District Launches Student and Staff Testing on Campus
The School District has launched daily COVID-19 testing for VISD staff and students on the school campus. The drive-through and walk-up testing operation is open Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 11:30am. Tests are free. No appointments are needed, just drop in. Students must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian unless they are 18 or older.

The new testing operation serves only District staff and students, so parents and other family members will need to obtain testing elsewhere. The service is for those who are symptomatic or concerned they may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19. No testing is available for travel or medical procedure purposes.

Feeling Ill: A Volunteer Does the Right Thing
One of the volunteers at the booster vaccination site tested positive with a rapid antigen test for COVID-19 this week. But everything has turned out fine, and big credit goes to the volunteer for doing the right thing. As soon as they experienced symptoms, the individual notified the site manager and remained at home. It seemed unlikely the person would be sick because they had COVID last year and had been fully vaccinated, including a booster. But one other volunteer who was potentially exposed left work at the booster site and went home as a precaution. PCR testing was arranged for the volunteer experiencing symptoms and, fortunately, the PCR test came back negative. The Medical Reserve Corps contact tracers have given an all clear, emphasizing that it’s very important that everyone get tested at any sign of symptoms.
Vashon Community COVID Statistics
• 231 = Total COVID cases for Vashon residents since the pandemic began.
• 115 = New cases since early July when the Delta variant hit Vashon
• 6 = Patients hospitalized since the pandemic began
• 4 = Deaths since the pandemic began
• 89.5% = Vashon residents (aged 12+) fully vaccinated (more than 95% have 1st shot)

Aquí están los detalles para la vacunación que empieza la semana que entra.
Podemos vacunar a todos los niños de 5 a 11 años, aunque no sean estudiantes de VISD. La vacuna es gratis para todos.
Si todo marcha bien, el plan actual nos permitirá vacunar a todos los niños con la primera dosis antes del Dia de Gracias o Thanksgiving y la segunda para las fiestas Navideñas. El año pasado tuvimos un pico importante en el número de casos durante las fiestas, y por eso le sugerimos que saquen su cita cuanto antes, para que todos los niños estén protegidos.
La vacunación tendrá lugar en el campus de la escuela, gracias a una colaboración entre el distrito, la farmacia de Vashon, VashonBePrepared, el MRC, el EOC y CERT. Estamos creando las diferentes clínicas por grados escolares, para que las clínicas se desarrollen pensando en las necesidades tanto de los hijos como de los padres, especialmente los más pequeños, que puedan estar un poco ansiosos al recibir la vacuna. También el número limitado de vacunas significa que no podremos vacunar a todos los niños a la vez.
 
Tres diferentes grados, en este orden: ¡regístrese ahora!
Primero serán los niños de grados 3 a 5. Las vacunas se darán el 10 y 11 de noviembre de las 4 de la tarde a las 7. Use el enlace: tinyurl.com/kids345 para registrar a sus hijos y dar consentimiento.
El siguiente grupo, será para chicos de 6º. año (solamente los de 11 años para abajo). Estas clínicas darán vacunas durante el día de clases. La vacunación de este grupo empieza el 12 de noviembre, con una segunda clínica unos días después en cuanto nos lleguen más vacunas. Para este grupo, use el enlace: tinyurl.com/kids6plus, para registrarse y dar consentimiento.
El tercer grupo, incluye a los chicos de 5 años para arriba, de kínder a 2º. grado. Estas clínicas ocurrirán en la escuela durante un fin de semana, y les daremos las fechas, en cuanto recibamos las vacunas. El registro para este grupo no está abierto todavía.
 
Tiene usted que regsitrar a sus hijos para el martes 9 de noviembre del 2021, a mediodía. No se le dará la vacuna a ningun niño que no esté registrado y tenga el permiso de sus padres.
El consentimiento de los padres es obligatorio bajo la ley estatal. Así que es importante que haga usted esto para que podamos saber el número de vacunas que necesitaremos. Si prefiere, también puede registrar a su hijo llenando la forma en papel que puede recoger en las oficinas de Chautauqua y McMurray. Una vez que llene la forma por favor regrésela a las mismas oficinas donde la recogió o a la farmacia, para el martes 9 de noviembre del 2021, a mediodía. Cada uno de los chicos, recibirá de manera automática su segunda dosis, que ocurrirá tres semanas después de la primera dosis.
La vacuna de refuerzo se está dando de nuevo en la farmacia. 
La vacuna de refuerzo para adultos seguirá estando disponible, pero en un lugar diferente. Con el fin de poder organizar la campaña de vacunación para los niños, le hemos puesto un alto a las vacunas que se han estado poniendo en la Iglesia Metodista, y redistribuir a los voluntarios. El registro se seguirá haciendo usando el mismo enlace: VashonPharmacy.com/COVID, donde se le darán instrucciones para que se ponga la vacuna en la farmacia.
El Distrito Escolar lanza un programa de pruebas para estudiantes y empleados
El Distrito Escolar ha lanzado un programa diario de pruebas para COVID-19 para estudiantes y empleados de la escuela nada más. Las pruebas se podrán hacer tanto en el auto como en la oficina de lunes a viernes de 7 de la mañana a las 11:30. Las pruebas son gratis. No se requiere de cita, nada mas vaya cuando la necesite. Los estudiantes que sean menores de edad tendrán que venir acompañados de un padre o guardián.

Este nuevo sistema de pruebas es nada más para estudiantes y empelados del Distrito, sí que los padres y otros miembros de la familia tendrán que hacerse la prueba en otro lugar. Esta prueba es para aquellos que tiene síntomas o estén preocupados de haber estado expuestos a alguien que tiene COVID-19. No hay pruebas para gente que quiere viajar o para procedimientos médicos. 


Para la prueba en el auto o a pie, la oficina está en la parte sur del edifico de StudentLink, cerca de la alberca. Los que necesiten la prueba, tiene que entrar por la calle SW 204. Para más detalles, visite: bit.ly/VISDtesting. 
Al sentirse enfermo: Un voluntario hace lo correcto 
Uno de los voluntarios en la clínica de vacunas de refuerzo tuvo una prueba positiva usando la prueba rápida. Pero todo resulto bien, gracias a que el voluntario hizo lo que tenía que hacer. En el momento en que empezó con síntomas, la persona les aviso a los de la clínica y se quedó en casa. Se pensó o que seria raro que la persona tuviera COVID, porque no solo estaba completamente vacunado, incluyendo la vacuna de refuerzo, pero ya le había dado COVID. La persona con la que trabaja en la clínica se fue a su casa de inmediato cuando supieron de la prueba positiva, como una medida preventiva. Para estar seguros, se le hizo una prueba de PCR a la persona que había tenido síntomas, y afortunadamente salió negativa. El MRC hizo todo el rastreo necesario y menciona lo importante que es hacerse la prueba cuando alguien tenga síntomas.
Estadisticas de COVID en la Comunidad de Vashon 
• 231 = Total de casos de COVID desde que empezó la pandemia.
• 115 = Nuevos casos de COVID desde principios de julio, cuando llegó la variante delta.  
• 6 = Pacientes hospitalizados desde que empezó la pandemia.
• 4 = Fallecimientos desde que empezó la pandemia.
• 89.5% = Residentes en Vashon (12+) completamente vacunados, (+ del 95%, han recibido una dosis).
