NOTICE: Plans are in progress to move our activation to a Standby/Monitoring level as the state of Washington moves towards reopening later this month and as the Vashon vaccination rate peaks. We estimate we will publish the last of the Situation Report for this emergency activation around
June 25. However, that date could be adjusted, depending on how the pandemic situation unfolds over the next few weeks. In preparation for discontinuing the Situation Report, the
VashonBePrepared.orgwebsite is being updated and will remain as a hub for COVID-19 resource information.

Vashon Vaccine Availability:
The Overview: It’s easy to get a vaccination
Monday through Saturday at one or the other of our island’s two vaccination locations, Sea Mar clinic or Vashon Pharmacy. That’s thanks to a reliable vaccine supply, combined with our high vaccination rate of nearly 90% that has recently reduced the demand for vaccinations.
Student Vaccinations: Students who still need a first or second dose of vaccine, but were not able to participate in the mobile vaccination clinics at Vashon High School or McMurray Middle School, can make arrangements at Vashon Pharmacy or Sea Mar Clinic (see details below).
Finishing the Job: More Vashon residents have been following through to complete the full two-dose vaccination course. The gap has narrowed to about 14% between those who have had their first dose and those who have completed their second dose. If you were among the many who went off island to get vaccinated when there was a big challenge finding a vaccine, no problem. You can get your second dose at Sea Mar Clinic or Vashon Pharmacy by following the directions below. If you are coming for a second dose, bring your vaccination card, so the vaccinators can be sure to give you the correct vaccine and check for proper spacing between your first and second dose. Nearly all vaccine recipients in our community have received the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines, which each require two doses. But anyone who received a Johnson and Johnson injection has already completed their vaccination course, since the J&J vaccine requires only a single dose.
Vashon Pharmacy Vaccinations: To get your first-dose vaccination, you are encouraged to go to
VashonPharmacy.com/COVID to pre-register and make an appointment, which could save you some time. However, you may drop in without an appointment
Monday through Saturday if you prefer. Pharmacy vaccination hours during the week are
10:00am to 12:30pm and
2:30pm to 6:00pm. On Saturdays, the hours are
9:00am to 12:00pm and
1:00pm to 4:00pm. Just go to the white vaccination tents at the rear of the Pharmacy, or look for a sign directing you to go inside the Pharmacy. Second-dose appointments cannot be made online, but you may call the Pharmacy for a second-dose appointment at
(206) 463-9118, or you can drop in without an appointment during any of the operating hours listed above.
Sea Mar Clinic Vaccinations: To find out when Sea Mar is offering vaccinations, and what vaccine is on offer, go to
SeaMar.org/COVID-Vaccine. You can also make an appointment in advance and be sure of getting your injection by calling the Sunrise Ridge clinic at
(206) 463-3671. Getting an appointment or advanced info on what’s available may save you a wasted trip since Sea Mar has been adjusting its vaccination operations to synchronize with the reduced demand for vaccinations. In order to avoid wasting leftover vaccine from the multi-dose vials, they are trying to consolidate patient vaccinations into a few days per week.
Vaccination Free to All: All COVID-19 vaccinations are free to all. If you have insurance, you’ll be asked for your information so providers can recover the cost of administering the free vaccine, but there’s no co-pay. If you do not have insurance, the cost is covered anyway and you will not be charged.

*Note 1: The statistics above are from the Public Health – Seattle & King County dashboard as of the date listed. Numbers may not be complete, as data processing lags and the actual number of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths may not yet match the dashboard.
Note 2: The federal HIPAA Act prohibits Public Health – Seattle & King County (PHSKC) from releasing the names of patients. For consistency of day-to-day data reporting for Vashon, the EOC uses only the ZIP code data from the Public Health – Seattle & King County dashboard.
Health Tips:
Masks protect us while we increase immunity. Health Officer Dr. Jeff Duchin said the indoor mask directive for public places in King County continues while the vaccination teams are still reaching out to our population. All King County residents aged five years and older are strongly encouraged to wear a mask in all indoor public areas. Why continue wearing a mask?
- Virtually everyone currently hospitalized for COVID is unvaccinated. Until more of us are vaccinated, wearing masks will prevent spread of COVID-19 among unvaccinated populations, including children younger than 12 and people with compromised immune systems.
- Cloth face coverings protect other people from getting COVID-19 from us when we talk, cough or sneeze.
- 20%-40% of people with COVID-19 don’t show any symptoms but can still spread the virus to others.
- Recent research suggests wearing a face covering can significantly reduce the incidence of COVID-19.
- The King County directive remains in effect until 2 weeks after 70% of residents age 16 and older are fully vaccinated.
- “Fully vaccinated” means at least two weeks after someone has had the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or the second shot of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine.
- People may choose to continue to wear masks when the directive lifts, to protect themselves or others.
- Many people cannot benefit from vaccination because of a weakened immune system.
- Some people working without paid time off have not yet been vaccinated, due to concerns about missing work due to side effects.
- Youth under age 12 are not yet eligible for vaccination – this includes 300,000 children in King County.
New Developments since Last Report:
King County reached the 70% fully vaccinated threshold today and that means the local indoor mask mandate will be lifted
in two weeks, about the same time Governor Inslee has said he would fully reopen the state. According to Public Health – Seattle & King County seventy percent of county residents, age 16 and older, have now received either the one-dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine, or both doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. People are considered “fully vaccinated” two weeks after they complete vaccination. Dr. Jeff Duchin, King County health officer said “Two weeks from today my local mask mandate will no longer apply and everyone will be following the CDC and Washington state guidance.” State and federal guidance say that unvaccinated people should continue to wear a mask indoors and everyone should continue to wear masks in certain crowded or high-risk indoor environments, including schools, health care facilities, jails and public transit.
Gov. Jay Inslee has consolidated or cancelled business and employee guidance for some industries. Unless otherwise specified, these industries will no longer need to follow industry-specific guidance. They will instead only need to follow general requirements, which include the COVID-19 workplace health and safety measures established by the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I). Some of the affected industries that are present on Vashon include domestic services, manufacturing, outdoor maintenance, construction, golf, museums, and outdoor recreation. A summary of the COVID-19 Workplace Safety and Health Requirements can be found at

Progress on Community Support Operations:
Emergency Operations Center (EOC): Vashon’s pandemic emergency response was activated 66 weeks ago (461 days). Our current operational priorities are health, food security, housing security, and economic recovery, as established by the Incident Commander, Fire Chief Charlie Krimmert, and approved by the VashonBePrepared Board.
EOC/Activated Units: Plans are firming up for downshifting most of our operations to Standby/Monitoring status while still maintaining several key community health and support services. As indicated in the note at the top of this Situation Report, for example, we tentatively plan to publish the final EOC Situation Report
on June 25th.
MRC/Testing: COVID-19 testing will continue on island after we move to Standby/ Monitoring status. The plan will include continued testing and contact tracing services for anyone experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, as well as access to home testing for those who need testing for other purposes, such as travel or prior to a medical procedure.
VashonBePrepared.org: An outline has been drafted for the new main page for the website. It will continue to provide comprehensive COVID-19 resource information. Assuming the pandemic follows its current downward trajectory, by the end of the year the website will hopefully be returned to its former all-hazards educational topics that are the mission of the VashonBePrepared coalition when not activated. Some of those topics include wildfire, winter weather, and next year’s multi-state Cascadia Rising earthquake exercise.
EOC/MRC/Vaccination: COVID-19 vaccination will continue to be available on island after the transition to Standby/Monitoring status. Both of the island vaccination sites, Sea Mar clinic and Vashon Pharmacy, have plans to provide island residents with local vaccination access.
VashonBePrepared/Vashon COVID Relief Fund: Preparation continues for the June disbursement of support to our social service and economic recovery agencies. The VashonBePrepared Board met today and will meet again in July to discuss next steps, including the establishment of a permanent reserve fund to make it possible to activate during the next emergency.
Volunteers: For the last full week reporting period, 29 volunteers contributed 351 hours of work to VashonBePrepared’s pandemic emergency response. That brings the total contributed hours to over 31,200 since the activation began. At the FEMA reimbursement grant rate of $31.72/hour, VashonBePrepared volunteers have run up more than $990,400 of contributed in-kind value. VashonBePrepared gives thanks to the staff and volunteers of local social services agencies for the many hours of extra work logged during the pandemic.
