Warmth. Light. Water. These essentials make our daily lives work. Without our electric, gas, and water systems, we would be much less comfortable following an emergency. This issue is the first of two newsletters to help you understand how to stay safe around these powerful community amenities. It’s part of our Prepare-in-a-Year campaign, which encourages you to complete just a few preparedness steps each month.

It’s the perfect time to get started on Prepare-in-a-Year if you haven’t already done so. It’s National Preparedness Month (tinyurl.com/NatlPrepMonth)! The theme this year: “Start a Conversation.” Get your peeps together and make a household commitment to preparedness.
Turning Off Your Natural Gas
Puget Sound Energy (PSE) says even after an earthquake, it’s essential to be sure you have a leak before turning off your natural gas at the meter. If you shut off your gas, you’ll need PSE to come to your home to restore service. That could take a long time after a disaster.

PSE advises you to turn off your natural gas only if you smell, see, hear, or suspect that gas is escaping. Here’s the PSE web page that explains in detail: tinyurl.com/TurnOffNaturalGas

If you need to turn off your gas service at the meter, follow these steps:

· Find your gas service shutoff valve. It should be at your gas meter.
· Use a wrench to turn the valve, either right or left, either one will do.
· Your supply is shut off when the wrench is perpendicular to the pipe.
· Be sure to call PSE to report your leak at (888) 225-5773.
Turning Off Your Propane
In an emergency, you may need to turn off the propane supply to your house.

· Locate your propane tank turn-off valve under the lid on top of the tank.
· Lift the lid and turn the main valve to shut off the propane supply to the house.
· Remember this traditional memory aid: “Lefty loosey, righty tighty.” Turning it to the left (counter-clockwise) opens the valve by loosening it. Turning it to the right (clockwise) closes the valve by tightening it.
Turning Off Your Electricity
Here are simple steps to take if you need to turn off the electricity supply to your house. We also have a helpful video.

· Find your main electrical panel. It’s usually on an interior wall, and there will be a number of switches, usually behind a door. The switches are called circuit breakers.
· Start at the bottom of the rows of circuit breakers. Turn off all the circuits in your house one by one, room-by-room, service-by-service.
· When all the circuits have been turned off, turn off the main switch. The main switch is larger than the circuit breakers and is usually located at the top of the electrical panel.
· When you are ready to turn the electric supply back on, turn on the main switch first and then turn on each of the individual circuits one by one. That will help prevent a surge that could damage electrical appliances and other equipment.

Yates Foundation: Lifesaving AEDs at School Fields
The Sam Yates Community Foundation announced that three Automated External Defibrillator (AED) devices are being installed at the school district sports fields. Even untrained people can utilize the devices to restart the heart of a stricken person. The units are unlocked and ready for everyone to use — not only for those at sports events.

Lifesaving AED in Place: One of the three AEDs has already been installed at the high school football field in time for the start of school. This unit is mounted on the bleachers (left) and also shown in close-up (right). Two other AEDs will be installed where they can be quickly accessed from the soccer and baseball fields plus the McMurray and Chautauqua playfields. The three units are lighted at night and available 24 hours a day. If you use the school fields, it’s a good idea to locate the AEDs in advance, before an emergency, just in case.
The Foundation’s Jill Yates pointed out: “The intense physical demands of youth sports can elevate the risk of sudden cardiac arrest, especially for those with undiagnosed heart conditions. So, immediate access to AEDs and early defibrillation can significantly improve survival rates. That’s why these three AEDs are designed to be outdoors at the school fields.”

The Foundation thanked the Vashon LaCrosse Club for donating one of the AEDs, and the other two were funded by the Foundation. Yates also thanked the Vashon Island School District for help with the installations.

The Sam Yates Community Foundation was established by Sam’s family following his tragic sudden death from a cardiac arrhythmia. Second Lieutenant Sam Yates was in the United States Marine Corps, completing training at The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia at the time of his death.

Primera Parte: Problemas de Seguridad de los Servicios Públicos
Calor. Luz. Agua. Estos elementos esenciales hacen que nuestra vida de todos los días, funcione. Sin electricidad, gas y agua, estaríamos mucho más incomodos después de una emergencia. Esta edición, es la primera de dos boletines informativos, que le ayudaran a entender como estar seguro alrededor de estos servicios comunitarios. Como recordaran, esto es parte de la campaña de Prepárese en un Año, que lo anima a que se completen unos cuantos pasos cada mes.

Apagando el Gas Natural
La compañía de luz, Puget Sound Energy o PSE, por sus sigla en inglés, nos dice que incluso después de un terremoto o temblor, es esencial que usted sepa que tiene una fuga de gas antes de apagar el gas natural en el medidor. Una vez que usted lo apaga, necesitará que la compañía de luz venga a su casa para restaurar el servicio. Y, esto puede tomar bastante tiempo después del desastre.

PSE le recomienda que solamente apague el gas si usted huele, ve, escucha, o sospecha que el gas se está escapando. Aquí esta el enlace para el sitio en la red de la compañía de luz, donde se explica en detalle que hacer: https://www.pse.com/es/pages/gas-shut-off
Si necesita usted apagar el servicio de gas en el medidor, siga los siguientes pasos:

· Encuentre la válvula donde puede apagar el servicio. Debe de estar donde esta el medidor de gas.
· Use una llave inglesa para darle la vuelta a la válvula, ya sea para la derecha o la izquierda.
· El suministro esta cerrado cuando la llave de tuercas está en posición perpendicular a la tubería.
· Asegurese de llamar a PSE para reportar la fuga, marcando el (888) 225-5773.
Apagando el Propano
En una emergencia, es posible que usted tenga que apagar el suministro de propano en su casa.

· Localice el tanque de propano y dele la vuelta a la válvula que esta bajo la tapa del tanque.
· Levante la tapa y dele vuelta a la válvula para apagar el suministro de propano hacia la casa.
· Recuerde esta mneumotecnia o facilitador de memoria en inglés: “Lefty loosey, righty tighty.” Donde al darle la vuelta a la válvula hacia la izquierda, lo aflojamos y al darle la vuelta hacia la derecha la apretamos.
Apagando la Electricidad
Aquí hay una serie de pasos muy sencillos si necesita usted apagar el suministro de luz a su casa. Y también hay un video disponible:

· Identifique donde está su cuadro o tablero eléctrico principal. En general se encuentra en alguna pared en el interior de la casa, donde habra un compartimiento que tiene una serie de interruptores, con frecuencia, atrás de una puerta. A los interruptores se les da el nombre de disyuntores o tablero de control principal.
· Empiece por la parte de debajo de cada línea de disyuntores y apague todos, uno por uno, cuarto por cuarto y servicio por servicio.
· Cuando todos los circuitos estén apagados, apague usted el interruptor principal. Este, es más grande que los otros interruptores y en general se localiza en la parte superior del tablero eléctrico.
· Cuando este usted listo o lista para prender de nuevo la electricidad, prenda primero el interruptor principal y después el resto, de nuevo uno por uno. Esto se hace con la idea de prevenir un aumento repentino en la electricidad que pudiera producir algún daño a sus aparatos eléctricos.

Fundación Yates: DAEs que Salvan Vidas en las Canchas de la Escuela
La Fundación Comunitaria Sam Yates anunció que colocará tres Desfibriladores Automáticos Externos o DAEs, en las diferentes canchas y campos del distrito escolar. Este aparto lo puede usar cualquier persona, aun sin entrenamiento y cuando sea necesario porque permite reiniciar el corazón de una persona que ha tenido un paro cardiaco. Las unidades no están bajo llave así que cualquiera pude tener acceso cuando lo necesite — no solo cuando haya eventos deportivos.

Aquí mostramos el DAE, que se ha instalado, para salvar vidas: Este es uno de los tres DAEs que se ha ya instalado, en la preparatoria, justo al inicio del año escolar. Esta unidad está montada donde están las gradas (izquierda) y del lado derecho, lo mostramos mas de cerca. Los otros dos se instalarán para rápido acceso, cerca de las canchas de futbol y béisbol y los campos de juego de McMurray y Chautauqua. Las tres unidades están iluminadas en la noche, y disponibles 24 horas al día. Si usted usa estas canchas, sería una buena idea que localizara los sitios donde los DAEs se encuentran, por adelantado, en caso de que en algún momento tengan que ayudar a alguien.
La Fundación Jill Yates, señaló: ‘Las intensas demandas físicas que la juventud que practica deportes tiene, elevan el riesgo de tener un paro cardiaco, sobre todo para aquellos con alguna lesión cardiaca que no ha sido diagnosticada. Así que el acceso inmediato a un DAE para hacer una desfibrilación temprana, mejora de manera importante la tasa de sobrevida. Esta es la razón por la que hay tres de estos desfibriladores, afuera, en las canchas y los campos de la escuela.’

La Fundación le dio las gracias al Club de LaCrosse de Vashon por haber donado uno de los desfibriladores. Los otros dos, los donó la Fundación. Yates también le da las gracias al Distrito Escolar por haber ayudado con la instalación.

La Fundación Comunitaria Sam Yates la estableció la familia de Sam, después de su trágico fallecimiento por una arritmia cardiaca. Alférez Sam Yates estaba en el Cuerpo de Infantería de la Marina de Estados Unidos, terminando su entrenamiento básico en la Basic School in Quántico, Virginia, cuando lo sorprendió la muerte.
