Jane Howard: Island creative and adventurer
November 11th, 2024 by Sally Jean Fox
Meet Jane Howard, known to many on Vashon as “Island Jane.” With a lifelong love for nature, Jane has worn many hats: naturalist, teacher, traveler, tour leader, entrepreneur, and artist. In 2018, her Hawaiian home was lost beneath 40 feet of lava during the Kilauea eruption. This profound experience called Jane to rebuild her life and deepen her creative journey. Join us as we explore her story of resilience, the unfolding of her artistic path in her 70s, and her inspiring new book, Hey Nature Lady.
Jane’s creativity has been nearly boundless—from her early career at the Pacific Science Center to her latest venture organizing adventure travel for women. She pioneered ecotourism with her company, Island Institute, based in the San Juan Islands, and later, while living in Hawaii, developed immersive, place-based curricula for Kamehameha Schools. After the Kilauea eruption, she returned to the mainland, drawing on her immense sense of possibility to rebuild her life.
Hey, Nature Lady is a collection of learning adventures for‘kids’ of all ages. Through tales of being lost in the Alaskan wilderness, trapped by lava, attacked by a Kodiak bear, threatened by callejeros (Mexican street dogs), and more, Jane stitches together fascinating personal stories of overcoming obstacles, fears, and disasters with resilience, connection, positivity, and humor.
