Richard Rogers ~ Flourishing Into Fine Art After 70

July 2nd, 2024 by Sally Jean Fox

How does one cultivate creativity and become even more creative after 70?

Richard Rogers has been a creator for many years since the first time he used a Kodak camera as a child. Always attracted to natural beauty, he took photos of pets, the World’s Fair, and subjects as diverse as President Richard Nixon, Abbie Hoffman, and the Black Panthers in the early ’70s in Tallahassee.

His career took him into graphic design and website design, and his creative expression took him in many directions, including building a 28-sided, tri-level yurt and becoming a comedy writer for Vashon’s beloved Church of Great Rain.

At 71, he was invited to participate in an art show of people who had created art on Vashon for 25 years or more. Selecting two photos for that show, he found 15 more images he liked and offered his first one-person photo show at Café Luna. Five more group and solo photo shows followed within a year.

He continues to work with design and manages the website, marketing and graphics for Voice of Vashon. He also writes comedy sketches for the CHRCH show and designs art and poetry books for high school student refugees.
