The Music and the Movies: Episode 38: Not-Nominated Scores of 2021

July 29th, 2024 by Robert Horton

We follow up on last week’s Best Score Oscar nominee show by highlighting some of the films of 2021 that were not nominated for their music—but which make for some good listening nonetheless. The iconography of Great Britain has a weirdly strong showing here, from movies about Princess Diana (Spencer) and James Bond (No Time to Die) to the more ancient realms of The Green Knight and The Tragedy of Macbeth. We’ve got mind-blowing modern sounds, too, especially in Dickon Hinchliffe’s score for The Lost Daughter and Mica Levi’s zany work from Zola, plus a smooth ride from the Japanese Best Picture nominee Drive My Car. Also, Anya Taylor-Joy goes “Downtown.”
